Garbage collection schedule for MLK Day 2022

Martin Luther King Jr Day is celebrated annually in all 50 states of the United States on the third Monday of January, with this year’s federal holiday falling on January 17.
Marking the birthday of the famous American activist and influential civil rights leader, MLK Day is used to commemorate and celebrate his life and achievements.
But since most public schools, banks and branches of government will be closed, people may not be sure if their trash is being collected as usual today.

No garbage or recycling collection will be performed on Monday, January 17, 2022.
As a result, collections will likely slip one day this week from their usual schedule.
However, you should check with your local authority as some private contractors may continue to operate garbage collection as usual.
New York City Sanitation, the world’s largest municipal cleaning force, won’t collect trash today.
The agency tweeted: “For those with a regular Monday collection: Please remember that tomorrow is Martin Luther King Jr. Day and collection has been paused for the holiday.”
However, US private waste management company WM is not observing MLK Day 2022, meaning operations will resume as usual on Monday.

Garbage collection won’t be the only service affected by the holidays.
The U.S. Postal Service will be closed today, which means there will be U.S. residential or business mail deliveries, unless it’s sent through USPS Priority Mail Express.
Major retailers like Walmart, Target Costco and major grocery stores will remain open Monday, though you should check with your local branch before traveling.
New York Stock Exchange and NASDAQ will not be open for business on MLK Day 2022. This practice applies to banks, according to the Federal Reserve’s schedule.
Non-essential government offices such as the Department of Motor Vehicles, state and federal courts, public libraries and city offices will also be closed on Monday.

Federal holidays were established in 1870, the year in which the first four federal holidays designated by parliament were created.
A statement on the Congressional Research Service website reads: “Although often referred to as national or public holidays, these celebrations are only legally applicable to federal employees and the District of Columbia. [Washington, D.C.], as the states determine their own legal holidays. “
As a result, most government offices close on the following days, while some private businesses may also follow.
