Gary Lineker says sacked Arsenal player is ‘a bit like Paul Pogba’

Speaking of Top 10 BBC Match of the Day PodcastGary Lineker spoke about Mesut Özil and his time at Arsenal.

The German was undoubtedly one of the most talented players in the Premier League during his time with the Gunners but, for one reason or another, at times he didn’t get the recognition he deserved.

Lineker believes Ozil was judged rather unfairly due to his careless playing style and unconventional running style, stating that, similar to Paul Pogba, Ozil was wrongly judged as a lazy player.

Lineker commented on Özil and his perception.

“Do you think he’s a bit like Paul Pogba in a way? In the sense that he was supremely gifted and played wonderful football but because he was playing in England and he wasn’t going for them and sprinting everywhere and they have a running style that looks kind of lazy but it’s just the way they do it move. Do you think we judged them for that and said, ‘They’re not trying hard enough or giving 100%,'” Lineker said.

Not suitable for the Premier League

Lineker is absolutely right, this style of play is not fit for the Premier League – or at least not fit for earning Premier League praise.

Özil and Pogba are both talented footballers but for making everything look so effortless they carry the stigma of being lazy.

English football was built on getting stuck and knocking your socks off, and any player who breaks that style is looked down on.

For the same reason, some football fans blindly swear that Lionel Messi couldn’t handle a cold, wet night in Stoke despite his constant terrorizing of Premier League sides in the Champions League for decades.

The discourse on football in certain circles in England is rather archaic and unfortunately Özil’s reputation has taken a hit as a result.
