Liverpool are within one foot of the Champions League semi-finals after beating Benfica 3-1 on Tuesday night – and Gary Lineker was blown away by Trent Alexander-Arnold and Luis Diaz.
The Reds took the lead in Lisbon when Ibrahima Konate headed in from a corner in the first half and Sadio Mane scored a second.
Alexander-Arnold’s stunning pass allowed Diaz to find Mane to score.
Darwin Nunez recovered one for Benfica but Liverpool restored their two-goal lead when Diaz ran away to score.
Having survived the first leg, Liverpool will now be confident of delivering the job at Anfield.
The effect of Diaz was amazing. Signed from Porto in January, the Colombian has quickly become a Premier League star.
Some players like Fabinho and Andrew Robertson have taken their time to get used to Jurgen Klopp’s style. Not Diaz.
A constant threat in the final third, Diaz was the perfect complement to Liverpool’s attack and the sky seems to be the limit for him.
A goal on Diaz’s return to Portugal didn’t come as a huge surprise, and neither did Alexander-Arnold’s performance.
Liverpool were given a boost by the return of Alexander-Arnold, who was a bench-fetch against Watford at the weekend.
Alexander-Arnold’s pass was ridiculous as always, he could completely dismantle the Benfica defense with one pass.
This happened on several occasions, with Alexander-Arnold once again proving to be a creative force at Liverpool’s right-back.
Alexander-Arnold and Diaz’s performance was praised by pundit Lineker, who was simply blown away.
Lineker praised a “superb goal” from Diaz and noted what a commitment he had been to Liverpool.
Lineker was equally impressed by Alexander-Arnold’s stunning pass for Mane’s goal and praised both players.
