Georgia man, 44, claims to be a “witch doctor” arrested for raping a woman

A 44-year-old Georgia man dubbed a “witch doctor” by police has been arrested for rape and false imprisonment after luring a woman into his home for a “cleansing ritual.”

Hassan Shalgheen was arrested last week after a woman said he sexually assaulted her at his home in Gwinnett County, about 20 miles northeast of Atlanta.

Duluth police officers responded to the Berkeley Landing apartments on Peachtree Industrial Boulevard at 11:15 p.m. last Sunday about a sexual assault call.

The victim met the police outside and told them she had been raped by Shalgheen. A neighbor told WSB-TV they saw several women going in and out of his apartment.

According to a police incident report, the two first met through social media. “The victim described the suspect as a ‘witch doctor’ and first went to his apartment to be ‘cleansed’ during a ‘ritual,'” it said.

The victim told police that after entering the apartment, she was forced to undress and was sexually assaulted.

An arrest warrant indicated she had sent him two online payments totaling $565 for his services as a witch doctor.

Police bodycam footage showed officers searching Shalgheen’s home later that night and arresting him. He appears to be sitting in handcuffs on the stairs in front of the apartment.

“We’re here to execute a search warrant. I’ll have my copies here with me, and we also have a search warrant for mucus swabs, DNA,” one of the officers was heard saying to Shalgheen on the video.

More than a dozen officers, some with shields and helmets, can be seen in the footage released by the Duluth Police Department. Shalgheen is seen sitting quietly on the steps to his house.

Video of the scene, captured by WSB-TV the next day, showed damage to his front door.

In the days that followed, he was committed to the Gwinnett County Adult Detention Center on $5,900 bail for two counts of rape, false imprisonment, theft by deception and sexual assault.

Police are now appealing for more people to come forward if they were attacked by Shalgheen.
