The nation’s new No. 1 team will take to the field for its first conference game of the season on Saturday when top-ranked Georgia take on South Carolina in an SEC East showdown. The Bulldogs earned first place in the AP Top 25 this week after beating their first two opponents 82-3 in an impressive start to the season for the reigning national champions.

South Carolina got off to a 1-1 start after beating Georgia State 35-14 in Week 1 and losing 44-30 to Arkansas last week in a tough SEC road contest. This is the fourth time in program history that the Gamecocks have hosted Team No. 1, and they have been competitive in the previous instances. In 2009, the Gamecocks lost to Florida 24-14, but the following season they defeated Alabama in one of the signature victories of Steve Spurrier’s coaching tenure with the program. The last instance of South Carolina hosting the No. 1 team came in 2015 when they lost to Clemson 37-32.

Keeping up with this Georgia team will be a tall order for the Gamecocks, but South Carolina upset the Bulldogs stunningly on the road in 2019 and it should be hungry to put in a better performance than it did in a 40-13 loss in the last season in Shane Beamer’s third game as head coach.

Georgia vs. South Carolina: Must know

Georgia’s injuries: The Bulldogs could lose some depth in the secondary if cornerback Nyland Green and veteran Nickel William Poole are unavailable. Green suffered a hamstring injury in the second half of the Bulldogs’ season-opening win over Oregon and did not play in last week’s 33-0 win over Samford. Poole is a sixth-year senior who has spent much of his career on reserve but played a key role for the Bulldogs late last season. Georgia coach Kirby Smart said this week that Poole is “struggling with some personal issues.” Junior receiver Adonai Mitchell could also miss the game after suffering an ankle injury in the Samford game. Mitchell caught 29 passes for 426 yards and four touchdowns last season and had four catches for 65 yards and a touchdown in Week 1 against Oregon.

South Carolina Offensive Line: This looks like it could be a tough matchup for South Carolina’s offensive line. The Gamecocks rank bottom in the SEC with 59.5 in rushing yards per game and will be up against one of the tightest defensive lines in the nation. While Georgia allowed 140 rushing yards against Oregon, the Bulldogs held a comfortable lead for most of the game, refining pass defense while playing from the front. From a pass-rush perspective, things don’t look much better. South Carolina has allowed pressure on 38% of dropbacks in two games, which is also the worst in the SEC. The Gamecocks’ nine sacks allowed are the fourth-worst in the nation. South Carolina may need to force a few turnovers or play some big games on special teams if they want to keep things tight in a tough offensive matchup.

Will Muschamp’s return: Georgia co-defensive coordinator Will Muschamp will stand on the opposing touchline at Williams-Brice Stadium for the first time since the end of his five-year tenure as Gamecocks coach in the 2020 season. Muschamp posted a 28-30 mark (17-22 in SEC) during his tenure, batting Smart in 2019. The former Georgia defenseman joined the Bulldogs as an analyst last season but later took on the role of special teams coordinator before stepping down to a coordinating job for this season after ex-defensive coordinator Dan Lanning left to become Oregon’s head coach . There’s a lot of familiarity in this matchup as Beamer is also a former Georgia assistant under Smart.

Georgia vs. South Carolina prediction, tips

Featured Game | South Carolina Gamecocks vs. Georgia Bulldogs

South Carolina’s problems on the offensive line mean disaster in this duel. The Gamecocks are struggling to protect quarterback Spencer Rattler and haven’t shown much of a rushed attack in two games. Georgia’s defense appears to have barely let up after picking up five players in the first round of the 2022 NFL draft, and the Bulldogs may be able to keep South Carolina from going into doubles. While Smart is unlikely to score a respected former assistant, Georgia should cover even if his offense keeps things tame. Forecast: Georgia (-24.5)
