Germany has a Hungary problem

For more than a decade, German politicians have coddled and placated not only the Kremlin, but also the most ruthless and openly anti-Western government in the European Union – in Budapest.

The negligence of Germany in Europe and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization was particularly evident in the face of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. For some Berlin critics, Ukraine’s recent cancellation of the planned visit by Federal President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Kyiv comes as a belated justification.
