GM is moving electric car production to Mexico after Biden praises them over Tesla

The Biden administration — and President Joe Biden in particular — has favored General Motors over Tesla when it comes to electric vehicle production.

For example, in his State of the Union speech this year, Biden said, “GM is making the biggest investment in its history – $7 billion to build electric vehicles, creating 4,000 jobs in Michigan.” He didn’t mention Tesla once.

It wouldn’t be a good look when GM announced its latest investment in electric vehicle production would be south of the border.

On Monday, CNBC reported, GM announced that an all-electric version of the Chevrolet Blazer will be built at its plant in Ramos Arizpe, Mexico.

Now, admittedly, one could make the argument that the regular Chevy Blazer is also assembled at the Ramos Arizpe factory. However, that argument is quite easy to dismiss.

In fact, Chevy did it on its own when they announced the Blazer EV.

“Its name is Blazer… and Blazer vibe, but nothing is shared between the two,” said Chevrolet Vice President Scott Bell.

Except, of course, the shared reality won’t be built by American workers.

It didn’t take long for Musk to hit back at hypocrisy.

“Teslas is the most U.S. made vehicle,” Musk tweeted after the news was revealed.

And, let’s not forget, it’s not just the Union State where the Biden administration is spying on Tesla.

After Tesla was not invited to a White House clean car event last August, Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg was asked why they were disqualified in an interview with CNBC. Buttigieg said he was “not sure” but implied that it had to do with Tesla becoming a “luxury” brand.

“We’re excited about all the momentum going into making sure Americans can drive electric cars in the future,” Buttigieg said.

“And by the way, we are also looking to a future where all of this is on the market. I don’t want the idea that this is just a luxury, or that this is just for the cars that you use to get around the cities.”

GM’s Blazer EV will start at $45,000 but go up to $66,000 for an “SS” performance model, according to CNBC. While it’s not as expensive as Tesla’s Model Y crossover, with which it competes, it’s still not cheap; According to the New York Post, the average Kelly Blue Book price for a gasoline-powered car is $25,240.

Of course, a larger factor may have to do with the fact that Tesla is not unionized. As NPR reported in March, Elon Musk has gone so far as to publicly dare to go public with United Auto workers to unite the workforce, predicting that it will fail because its employees receive treatment and good treatment.

Then-White House press secretary Jen Psaki was more vocal about Tesla’s lack of consolidation as part of the reason why they weren’t invited to the clean car event.

“Of course, we applaud the efforts of all automakers who recognize the potential of the electric vehicle future and support efforts to help achieve the president’s goals. And certainly, Tesla is one of those companies,” Psaki said at the time, according to Fox News.

“Today, those are the three biggest United Auto workers and the president of the UAW will stand with President Biden as he announces his ambitious new goal, but I didn’t expect this to be the last time we’ll see them. We talk about clean cars, the move towards electric vehicles, and we look forward to having many partners in that endeavor. “

Psaki was then asked if Tesla’s unaffiliated status had anything to do with their uninvited. She only reiterated that the companies in attendance represent “the three biggest employers of United Auto workers.”

“I’ll let you draw your own conclusions,” she added.

There’s also the fact that Tesla switched its operations from green to red, officially shutting down from California and moving to Texas in December 2021, Business Insider noted.

Joe Biden loves him some union anyway. And he’s all supportive of green state policies like the one that got Tesla out of California and into Texas.

And yet, while Tesla continues to manufacture in the US, GM will build the Blazer EV in Mexico. An astute president will learn from this. So, in other words, don’t expect Biden to learn anything.
