God of War Ragnarok sold 5.1 million copies in its first week, the fastest-selling first-party PlayStation game

God of War Ragnarok is unsurprisingly selling like hotcakes.

Today, Sony revealed that God of War Ragnarok was, as expected, very successful in its first week on shelves.

As revealed by PlayStation Studios boss Hermen Hulst on twitter, the game has sold 5.1 million copies as of Sunday November 13th, 2022, marking the end of its first week on digital and physical shelves (the game was released on November 9th). This likely means the current number is even higher.

As a result, it’s the fastest-selling first-party game in PlayStation history, and also set a record for the God of War franchise.

Given the quality of the game (which you can read all about in our review, with our own Chris Jecks calling Ragnarok “is both the last swan song of the PS4 and the best the PS5 has to offer”), should we might not be too surprised when you see it selling like hot cakes. Congratulations to the good folks at Sony Santa Monica who have been working hard on this over the last few years.

God of War Ragnarok is currently available on PS5 and PS4.

If you’re unfamiliar with the game, it’s the continuation of the adventures of Kratos and Atreus after the previous God of War game, which released in 2018 for PS4 and earlier this year for PC.

It continues the God of War franchise’s smooth reboot after Kratos left Greece to move to Scandinavia and potentially live a quiet life. Unfortunately, Sony Santa Monica didn’t want to make a farming simulator, so his hopes of settling down peacefully with his new family were dashed by the inevitable clash with the local gods.

It will certainly be interesting to see if this success will catalyze a new game for the legendary franchise. The future will show.
