Graeme Souness urges Manchester United to sign ‘fabulous’ £40m Tottenham target

Graeme Souness told TalkSPORT (11.28am Monday) that Manchester United should consider a move for Aston Villa captain John McGinn this summer – a player who has attracted interest from Tottenham this summer.

Manchester United were defeated 4-0 by Brentford on Saturday night. A striking weakness of the United side was their midfield, with Erik Ten Hag replacing Fred with Scott McTominay at half-time. Adrien Rabiot is a target for United.

United are also targeting Frenkie de Jong, of course, but the Dutchman’s move seems unlikely after a summer-long saga. He is keen to stay at Barcelona and the club still owe De Jong money for unpaid wages.

Manchester United have yet to improve their midfield in terms of signings. Speaking on TalkSPORT on Monday, Souness claims Manchester United should consider a move for Villa skipper McGinn instead.

The Scotland international has just been appointed captain of Aston Villa. It will likely persuade him to stay at Villa Park under Steven Gerrard, although Tottenham have shown interest in the £40million-rated ace.

“I’m thinking of John McGinn. He would be a fabulous player for Manchester United. He’s the kind of player who would stand up and make that kind of tackle, make it a challenge. They didn’t have that over the weekend,” Souness said.

Souness: Manchester United should consider McGinn

It would be a fantastic signing for Manchester United – but there’s certainly no chance of that happening. Villa is an ambitious club. Despite having a mediocre start to the season, they will be pushing towards Europe.

You have the players to make it happen. So realistically, they’re not far off Manchester United, who are likely to be in and around the top 6. Of course, United is a much bigger club than Villa. But he’s captain of the Villa now.

On paper, McGinn’s tenacity and aggression is something United lack. However, it is extremely unlikely that he will leave Villa in the foreseeable future – especially since he still has a contract until the summer of 2025.
