Greg Davies has a blast with Zoë Wanamaker as they film scenes for The Cleaner Season 2

What happens when two actors meet a giant testicle in a sleepy English town? The answer seemed obvious as work began on a new BBC series this week.

Accompanied by a small camera crew, Greg Davies returned to his beloved role as Paul “Wicky” Wickstead while filming season two of sitcom The Cleaner in leafy Buckinghamshire.

The Welsh comedian, 54, was joined by veteran actress Zoë Wanamaker – the latest established star to make a cameo on the hit series about the exploits of a crime scene cleaner – as filming resumed on Tuesday.

In a bizarre twist, the two were seen exchanging lines in front of a giant veined testicle sculpture precariously placed on a small pedestal.

Wanamaker, 73, seemed oblivious to the decorative backdrop as she filmed with Davies, who wore lead character Wickstead’s cap and cargo pants while observing an apparent crime scene.

Based on the German show Der Tatortreinigung, The Cleaner has been commissioned by the BBC for a second series after a preliminary six episodes aired last October.

Written and co-produced by Davies, the show sees crime scene cleaner Wickstead meet a cast of unlikely characters in his day-to-day work.

The first series featured cameo appearances from British stars Helena Bonham Carter, David Mitchell and Stephanie Cole, while the second series is expected to welcome more established actors into the group.

Alongside Wanamaker, uncle Raquel Cassidy and Johnny English Strikes Again star Adam James will also star in yet-to-be-established roles.

It won Best New TV Sitcom in the British Comedy Guide’s Comedy.co.uk Awards 2021.
