Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, preparing for a new Superman sequel, says audiences are getting superhero movie “fatigue,” especially after Marvel’s epic Avengers: Endgame.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Gunn, who is currently co-head of DC Studios, said that “there’s such a thing as superhero fatigue.”

“I think it has nothing to do with superheroes. It has to do with the kind of stories being told and if you lose track of what character is.

“We love Superman. We love Batman. We love Iron Man. Because they are these incredible characters that we hold in our hearts. And when it becomes just a bunch of nonsense on screen, it gets really boring.”

Gunn, who is in the process of writing the Superman: Legacy origin story, had previously noted that it might be difficult for Marvel to continue telling superhero stories after Avengers: Endgame because of the “universe” wide event that’s happening is’ ​​at the end of the film.

The director added that he tends to “tire of most spectacle films because they don’t have an emotionally grounded story. It has nothing to do with whether it’s a superhero movie or not.’

“If you don’t have an underlying story, just watching things fall into place, no matter how clever those bashing moments are, no matter how clever the designs and the VFX are, it just gets tiring, and I think that’s very very real.’

So far, both the plot and the casting decisions for the upcoming film are unknown. But a new actor is set to don the famous cape after DC publicly severed ties with actor Henry Cavill, who played the iconic American superhero in multiple films.

Gunn isn’t the only A-list director in Hollywood feeling the rush of superheroism.

Academy Award-winning director Quentin Tarantino said last year that he “can’t wait” for the hyper-movement surrounding superhero films to subside.

The acclaimed ‘Kill Bill’ and ‘Pulp Fiction’ director said he hasn’t touched the genre yet because ‘you have to be a tired hand to do things like that’.

“I’m not an employee. I’m not looking for a job,” he told the LA Times last November.

He added that the “writing isn’t quite on the wall yet” for a decline in the popularity of superhero films. He speculated that the final stopping point may be similar to when studios stopped pumping out musical adaptations in the 1960s.

That phenomenon, he said, ended when the studios realized, “Oh my god, we just poured a bunch of money into things that no one cares about anymore.”

In 2021, director Ridley Scott called superhero movies “boring as shit.”

“The best movies are driven by the characters, and we’ll get to the superheroes after that if you will, because I’m going to crush it. I’ll mess it up They’re fucking boring as shit,” the director of the House of Gucci told Deadline.

Both directors’ comments follow similar comments made by Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese in December 2019.
