Gulfport cop shoots, injures person at stop

GULFPORT, Mississippi (AP) — A Mississippi Gulf Coast police officer shot and killed a person during a traffic delay Tuesday, and the person was hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, the state Department of Public Safety said.

A department press release said the shooting happened while a Gulfport police officer was conducting a traffic stop and the person stopped “presented the officer with a gun.”

The department did not release any other details about the officer or the person who was shot.

The Mississippi Bureau of Investigation is investigating the case as it conducts most shootings on or by law enforcement officers in the state. MBI is a department of the Ministry of Public Security.
