Hallmark’s Countdown to Christmas movie lineup is finally out, and some people aren’t happy about it

Few things say “Christmas is coming” quite like Hallmark announcing its staggering slate of Christmas content.

Like clockwork, they’ve announced this year’s offerings: 40 brand new movies, three of them every weekend starting October 21st.

In a video promo released in July, Hallmark explained that this year’s lineup is “sweater than ever.”

“It’s time for celebratory fun!” Countdown to Christmas Facebook page shared on Thursday.

“The Countdown to Christmas on Hallmark Channel and Miracles of Christmas on Hallmark Movies & Mysteries begins October 21 with 40 brand new original movies! Download our handy programming guide and get in the holiday spirit.”

It wasn’t all that long ago that Hallmark was heralded by everyone for its family-friendly, cozy, and harmless content – but over the years, some of their loyal viewers were starting to get concerned.

Many more of them religious Fans who enjoyed getting acquainted with new characters in pleasantly familiar scenarios have drawn a line when it comes to the couples Hallmark has focused on.

After some commented three years ago that no Hallmark film had starred an LGBTQ couple, Michelle Vicary, executive vice president of programming for Crown Media Family Networks, said that was going to change in the future.

“We continue to expand our diversity,” Vicary said TheWrap back then. “We’re looking for LGBTQ film slots … and we want to expand and represent the United States as a whole.”

Petitions were circulated. Viewers threatened to take their business elsewhere. It seemed that a large fanbase was ready to abandon ship, and this year Hallmark announced its first-ever gay couple as the stars of one of the holiday pictures.

“Sam is a workaholic bachelor who babysits his niece and nephew before the holidays when his sister and her husband have to go out of town.” Trademark Read the blurb for the film.

“Out of his element, he enlists the help of her handsome neighbor Jason and finds himself in an unexpected romance.”

As a result, some have refused to watch Mark movies more and have instead migrated to other providers, including Great American Family (formerly known as Great American Country).

Great American Family offers an amazingly similar selection of light-hearted games romantic comedy and Christmas films and even convinced the “Christmas Queen” actress Candace Cameron Bure to join them.

In September, Bure told diversity that she made the switch to pursue the more “trustworthy,” “healthy,” and “family-friendly” movies being made for Great American Family.

Though they’re a bit of the newbies on the block and not as widely available as their competition, they promise viewers an alternative that will celebrate “faith, family and country,” they say Facebook Side.
