Harrisburg student arrested for having a gun

HARRISBURG, Pa. (WHTM) — A student in the Harrisburg School District was arrested Friday, January 27 after being in possession of a firearm.

According to the Harrisburg School District, the Rowland Academy student was in possession of the firearm during an altercation after school and off campus.

The district says they have no reason to believe the gun was on school property or in the school during class.

Superintendent Eric Turman released a statement regarding the arrest, which you can read in full below:

Dear Parents, Guardians, Students and Staff of Rowland Academy,

I am disappointed to report that one of our Rowland Academy students was arrested today for possession of a firearm during an altercation after school and off campus. You can hear about this incident on the news tonight.

As part of our safety protocol, all Rowland Academy students must pass through gun/metal detectors before entering our schools each day. We have no reason to believe this gun was in our school. As always, we are focused on creating the safest learning environment for our students and staff.

While law-breaking students often receive media attention, it is very important to remember that the overwhelming majority of our students are law-abiding children and young people eager to learn, grow and be their exploit full potential.

Mr. Eric Turman, Superintendent, Harrisburg School District
