A bizarre theory has gone viral on the internet after a “mermaid found in Africa” video made the rounds on multiple social media platforms.
It doesn’t take long for conspiracy theories to become the topic of conversation on social media when users around the world share, comment and like a specific post.
In the past few days, a TikTok video featuring a strange mermaid theory has captured the imaginations of millions of people.
We break down everything we know about the video.
The video “Mermaid found in Africa” goes viral
In April 2022, a Video titled “Mermaid in Kenya” made the rounds on TikTok before gaining popularity on other platforms.
The video was uploaded by TikTok user @skinfluencebymsk and has garnered 8.8 million views at the time of writing. The TikToker said she decided to upload the footage after many users tagged her in their posts.
At the beginning of the video, she spends about a minute discussing the nature of the footage to familiarize her followers with it. The end of the video shows a group of people gathered on a beach in front of a washed up “creature” that some people claim is a “mermaid”.
The lower half of the “mermaid” resembles a fish tail, while the upper half appears to show a young person with arms outstretched and eyes closed.
The issue has evidently put pressure on social media, with the video’s creator captioning her post, “It’s not that serious folks. If you believe it, you believe it, if you don’t believe it, you don’t – simple as that. Don’t get so aggressive in comments.”
Has a mermaid been found in Kenya?
It seems extremely unlikely – that doesn’t look like a real video of a mermaid to us.
We have found the original YouTube video, which lasts a little over two minutes and shows the “essence” from different sides. If you pause at 0:07, you can clearly see that there is a gap between the girl’s belly and the fishtail.
This suggests that the bottom half of the “mermaid” is just a fishtail. Also, the “mermaid’s” hair looks like something out of a Disney movie. The girl has long ombre hair that looks like a red wig, similar to Ariel’s hair.
Many users pointed out that the mermaid didn’t appear to have webbed fingers or gills.
One TikTok user thought there was puppetry in the game: “The way the fins move is simultaneous, almost in rhythm. That calls for puppetry, not reaction.”
Most users think the video is a lazy story
It’s safe to say that many people aren’t convinced that the video is real.
“To me it looks like a child in the mouth of a fish and people call it a mermaid,” one user commented under the TikTok video.
Another asked: “My biggest question is have they checked that the fish and human parts are connected? Did a fish swallow a child, or were they actually a living thing?”
Another wrote, “She’s literally wearing an ombre wig – do you think mermaids have a wig shop?”
