Portugal secures a World Cup place in Qatar together with Argentina
Europe will be the most represented continent at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, with UEFA receiving 13 entries. Ten countries secured a spot at the tournament through the qualifying campaign. But Portugal failed to lead Group A as Serbia sealed the only automatic position.
Fernando Santos’ Selecao finished three points ahead of Serbia, who went unbeaten in their eight games. So Portugal had to make the play-offs, defeating Turkey 3-1 in the semi-finals before beating North Macedonia – who had eliminated Italy in the semi-finals – 2-0.
Argentina secured their place at the Qatar World Cup in November-December 2022 via their qualifying group. Lionel Scalonis Albiceleste represents South America along with leaders Brazil, along with third- and fourth-placed qualifiers Uruguay and Ecuador.
Did Argentinian icon Lionel Messi win a World Cup?
Paris Saint-Germain star and Barcelona icon Messi is the most-capped player in Argentina’s history with 160 appearances to date. But the 34-year-old, who has won seven Ballon d’Or and two Fifa player of the year awards, has yet to help his country win a World Cup.
Argentina has won football’s greatest trophy twice, with successes in 1978 and 1986. But La Albiceleste has only reached one final with Messi, in which Germany beat Argentina 1-0 in the 113th minute of extra time at the 2014 edition Mario Gotze defeated in Brazil.
Messi scored four goals and provided an assist in the Brazilian edition of the World Cup. He also scored once and assisted in 2006, assisted once in 2010 and scored once and assisted two in 2018. He has played a total of 19 times in four World Cup appearances.
Has Portugal icon Cristiano Ronaldo won a World Cup?
Manchester United star and Real Madrid icon Ronaldo is also Portugal’s most capped player with 186 appearances to date. And like Messi, the 37-year-old has yet to help his country win a four-final World Cup, with fourth-place finish at Germany 2006 as a personal best.
Ronaldo has played 17 times in his four World Cup appearances, providing seven goals and two assists. He scored his first goal in 2006 before scoring once in South Africa 2010, Brazil 2014 and Russia 2018. He also assisted once in 2010 and 2014.
A World Cup victory in Qatar would be the first for Ronaldo and Portugal, who had never reached the final before. The Selecao’s best run came in England in 1966 when the nation finished third. They haven’t progressed past the last 16 since finishing fourth in Germany in 2006.
