Has Rory McIlroy, one of golf’s biggest names, ever played at Augusta to win The Masters? How many majors has he won?
McIlroy started the final day of The Masters with a +1 over 54 holes and a tie in ninth place.
However, the Northern Irishman had a superb final round in Georgia, including an eagle on the par 5 13th hole.
Despite his best efforts, however, Scottie Scheffler’s lead was unassailable for McIlroy – despite his impressive game on Sunday.
He just missed overtaking Scheffler.
His round of 64 is the second-best in Augusta history — behind a record 63.
But has Rory McIlroy ever won The Masters? Is his name on a green jacket?
Did Rory McIlroy win the Masters?
Rory McIlroy has never won the Masters – but he certainly came close.
In 2011 he was the man to beat, carding 65, 69 and 70 in the first three rounds to sit 12 under par and going into the final day four shots ahead.
His collapse on Sunday was breathtaking. He scored a +1 37 on the front nine holes to still maintain the lead, but the back nine was terrible.
He hit 53 shots for a round of 80 – the worst in pro history after leading on day three in Augusta.
He finished 15th with four among the tied.
Other than that, he finished fourth in 2015 and fifth in 2018 and 2020.
He’s guaranteed to be at least third in 2022 behind Scottie Scheffler and maybe Cameron Smith.
Has he won majors?
McIlroy was looking for the Grand Slam after winning the Masters in 2022 – and will be looking for it in 2023.
His first major was the US Open in 2011, followed a year later by the PGA Championship.
In 2014 he claimed a second PGA and also added The Open.
McIlroy is also a five-time Ryder Cup winner.
