Madeleine Albright, the first woman to serve as US Secretary of State, has died of cancer at the age of 84 according to to a statement from her family.
In addition to serving as Secretary of State from 1997 to 2001, Albright is the author of several best-selling books, an avid drummer and an influential businesswoman.

Who is Madeleine Albright Young?
Madeleine Jana Korbel Albright was the first female Secretary of State.
Albright was born in Czechoslovakia in 1937, but her family fled in 1939 when the Nazis occupied the country. They moved into a basement of a Notting Hill apartment before returning to Prague after World War II.
They then moved to the United States in 1948 and lived in Denver. Albright graduated from Wellesley College and earned a master’s degree from Columbia University. In 1959 she married Joseph Albright and had three daughters together, they divorced in 1982 and Madeleine did not remarry.
Shortly after Clinton’s re-election for a second term in 1996, Albright replaced former Secretary of State Warren Christopher.
