Hotel where a Channel migrant stayed before he stabbed a teenager

This is the £100 a night taxpayer funded hotel just 500 meters from Bournemouth beach which an Iraqi immigrant blames for stabbing a student to death in hopes he would be deported.

Rebaz Mohammed, 28, was staying at the three-star Roundhouse Hotel, a five-minute walk from the seaside town’s seafront promenade, when he stopped stranger Ellis Wheeler, 18, to ask him a question before stabbing him in the back last December .

Mohammed carried out the attack in hopes it would deport him from Britain, the court heard, where he had arrived illegally by crossing the Channel in a small boat.

The court heard he was disappointed with life at the Bournemouth Hotel, which boasts of its “individually decorated” rooms that are “just a short walk” from the city’s local attractions.

Mohammed, who had a number of criminal records including a prison sentence, then chased the Solent University student, who managed to run away before he passed out.

Southampton Crown Court heard that Mohammed carried out the attack in hopes it would deport him from Britain, where he had arrived illegally by crossing the English Channel in a small boat. He was disillusioned with life in a taxpayer-funded Bournemouth hotel and complained of having “no job or money”, the court heard.

CCTV footage released today shows the Iraqi stopping him to ask if Mr Wheeler knew anything about kickboxing. He then pulled a kitchen knife from his coat before jabbing it in the teen’s back and puncturing his lung.

The young man was taken to the hospital, where he underwent surgery. A “heroic” friend put pressure on the wound while dialing 999 and was thanked by a judge for saving his life. Mr. Wheeler missed his exams and is still struggling to sleep due to anxiety attacks.

It comes amid a controversial crackdown on cross-Channel migration by Home Secretary Suella Braverman, who is due to present her illegal migration bill to Parliament on Monday.

The new law would deport asylum seekers who enter the UK on unauthorized small boats to a safe third country and ban them from ever returning to the UK.

MailOnline asked the Ministry of the Interior today whether and when Mohammed will be deported. However, officials declined to disclose the information, saying they had “not commented on individual cases”.

Mohammed was apparently offended that he had no money to get home, so he hoped a very serious crime would mean the British government would immediately fly him back to Iraq.

Andrew Houston, prosecutor, said Mohammed spoke to people who knew the immigration system before the attack.

As it turned out, he had already been cautioned for assault and assault before the knife attack and was sentenced to 12 weeks in prison last May for racial harassment and stalking.

Today he is starting a six-year sentence in a UK prison after pleading guilty to willful aggravated assault and possession of a knife blade.

Judge Brian Forster KC convicted Mohammed and berated him for inflicting the horrific injuries “to further his own ends.”

He said: “If someone attacks with a knife, it’s coincidence.

“It was a random attack. Any member of our community could have been the victim.

“You were willing to inflict serious injury with a weapon to achieve your own goal. You could have killed the victim.”

Six months before the attack in Southampton, 30 miles away in Bournemouth, Afghan double killer Lawangeen Abdulrahimzai, 21, murdered Thomas Roberts during a dispute over an electric scooter in March 2022.

His trial heard him crossing the Channel to seek asylum, but UK police databases failed to recognize he was a “knife-obsessed” criminal who fled Serbia after shooting two men and sentenced to 20 years in prison had been.

Mohammed was arrested at the scene and told police he had attacked his victim so he could be sent home to Iraq.

After the “indiscriminate” attack at Hoglands Park, he was sentenced to six years in prison with an additional four years in prison.

The student ran away after the attack but lost consciousness – a “heroic” friend called 999 and put pressure on his horrific wound until police arrived, the court heard.

Richard Tutt, defending himself, said Mohammed “made every effort to be deported” but had no job and no money.

Mr Tutt said: “He believed after what he had been told he had to commit an offense of serious enough nature.

“He presents himself as a very naive person. He has experienced remorse, or at least sorrow.’

The judge praised the victim’s friend, saying he “maybe saved.” [his] life’ and awarded him £250.

The number of asylum applications rose to 74,751 last year, equivalent to 89,398 people – the highest level since 2002
