While no one knows when Belichick will call it off, one NFL Insider spoke about what the organization will be like when Belichick decides to retire.
Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer appeared on “The Rich Eisen Show” and talked about what it would be like when Belichick decided to leave the team.
“I think whenever he leaves, he’s going to want to put it in good shape,” Breer told Eisen. “One thing I can remember covering him up to the beat, and this was last year, he – I remember he felt the same way Bill Parcells, who was clearly his boss, left. a few teams in rather rough condition. I think there’s this kind of determination that whenever he leaves New England, he’s not going to do it. ”
New England State
Currently, the Patriots are on the road to rebuilding their roster. Mac Jones last season showed he’s more than just a capable NFL quarterback who can lead New England. The 23-year-old threw 3,801 yards along with 22 touchdowns and 13 interceptions last season.
New England also has one of the best running defenders in the entire league. Damien Harris has run 929 yards and 15 touchdowns in 2021 and is ranked second in the NFL with his touchdown record.
The Patriots also improved in the wide receiver this season. DeVante Parker appears to be New England’s top recipient after he was acquired through trade.
While Parker is having a rough season where he’s made just 40 hits for 515 yards and two touches, he’s just 29 years old.
On the defensive side of the ball is a slightly different story. New England have lost JC Jackson and right now his replacement appears to be Malcolm Butler, who has signed with the Patriots this season.
Aside from the additions of Mack Wilson and Butler, the New England defense remained relatively unchanged with the likes of Ja’Whaun Bentley and Devin McCourty returning to the squad.
So while the Patriots are in a good position, there is still work to be done.
Motivation to beat Brady
Breer also mentioned that Belichick still has a point to prove even after hosting the Super Bowl Ring six times.
“He’s not going to leave a team when it’s not in better form than when he found it. I think he’s driven to prove that he can win without (Tom) Brady and win at a high level without Brady. I think he wants to leave it – whoever he leaves it to, whether it’s Bill O’Brien or Matt Patricia or whoever is going to help him succeed – I think he wants to leave it as is. Good attitude for whoever is the next coach to follow him. ”
According to Breer, winning another Super Bowl is not a requirement for Belichick. The head coach will need to strike a balance between wanting to win at a high level without Brady while also building for the future.
But Patriots fans shouldn’t expect Belichick to mortgage the organization’s future just to try to win one last Super Bowl. He wants to make sure New England is in a good position before deciding to pause and end his legendary career.
