Julia Child died on August 13, 2004, just two days before her 92nd birthday. The death of the child was followed by decades of success in her career. In 1965 she received a Peabody Award. The following year, she won an Emmy for her work The French chef. With the royalties from the sale of her seminal book mastery of French cuisine, Child and her husband even built a country house in Provence, France. They spent their 1966 Christmas party at the La Pitchoune estate. They spent the next few decades fleeing to their French homeland to rest and work. “How lucky we are at this moment in our lives! Each doing what he most desires, in a beautifully adapted place, close together, excellently fed and housed, in excellent health and few interruptions,” Paul wrote to his brother once about this time.

Still, Child wasn’t always the epitome of good health. While completing designs for her in 1968 The French Chef Cookbook, based on her PBS series of the same name, Julia was diagnosed with breast cancer. After a routine biopsy confirmed the news, Child’s doctors ordered a complete, radical mastectomy. “Left breast off,” she wrote in her February 18, 1968 schedule, per PBS. At that time she was in the hospital for a total of 10 days, during which time her husband Paul was a wreck. While he feared losing her, Child was reportedly stoic herself until she burst into tears in a bathtub at home after her hospitalization.

The child’s battle with cancer remained a rare topic of discussion in her life, although she later spoke out loud about her experience in hopes of inspiring others to seek treatment. “I certainly wouldn’t walk around having a radical [mastectomy] because it’s not worth it,” she said of her cancer experience in an interview with TIME. It is believed that Child remained in remission until her death.
