“How do you even come up with this argument?”

White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre faces questions about border security as immigration receives renewed attention.

During a news conference Thursday, NBC News’ Kristen Welker asked if the White House stood by Vice President Kamala Harris’ claim that the border was safe.

“We stand by doing everything in our power to ensure we follow the proposed process… to ensure that the people we meet at the border are removed or expelled,” the spokesman replied. “The fact is that this year more people who are found at the border will be deported or expelled than in any previous year.”

However, Welker asked: “Is the border safe, Karine? Is the border safe?”

“I’ll just contact the vice president. We agree with her. She says there is still work to be done… We agree that the border is safe, but there is still work to be done,” said Jean-Pierre.

Welker countered, “The question is how do you even make that argument when DHS has said it’s preparing for those potentially 2 million migrants to come?”

“We’ll say that. Rebuilding the immigration system – particularly one that was decimated under the previous government – will not happen overnight,” said Jean-Pierre. “We know there is a lot to do. But we are doing the work to make sure we remove and deport people who come here and are found at the border.”

Nevertheless, she emphasized that a “long-term solution can only result from comprehensive legislation that reforms a fundamentally broken system in a sustainable manner”.

She also slammed the Republican governors of Texas, Arizona and Florida for transporting migrants to other locations such as Chicago, New York City, Washington D.C., and Martha’s Vineyard.

“What we’re seeing with Republicans … using migrants as collateral isn’t the way to move forward on this. We’re not going to manage it like that,” said Jean-Pierre.

During an interview with NBC News, Harris was asked if she was confident the border is safe given the projections the US is about to see 2 million limit crossings at the end of the financial year for the first time ever.

“We have a secure border that is a priority for every nation, including ours and our administration,” the vice president replied.

She added: “But there are still many issues that we are trying to resolve given the deterioration over the past four years. We must also enact a law and a plan for a path to citizenship for the millions of people who are here and willing to do what the law requires them to do to obtain citizenship.”
