how it works when the field is trimmed for the weekend

The field for The Masters will soon be divided as some head home ahead of the weekend’s action – but how will it be decided and how many will get through?

We’re a quarter of the way through the 2022 Masters in Augusta – with Im Sung-jae of South Korea leading -5 under par.

Five-time champion Tiger Woods is back at -1 while reigning Masters champion Hideki Matsuyama is level after hitting a par 72 on the first 18 holes.

But soon the Masters field will be trimmed as the cut takes effect, with some packing up their racquets and going home.

What is the cut at The Masters?

The cut at The Masters is something used in every tournament – and major.

It’s a way of narrowing down the field – 2022 in Augusta with over 90 participants – to a smaller number for the weekend when the awards will be presented.

The Masters first adopted the cut in 1957, and various changes were made to the format throughout the year.

The youngest was in 2020.

How many will make it through?

Previously, to avoid the cut at The Masters, a golfer had to be in the top 50 (including a tie) or within ten shots of the lead.

This had increased from top 40 to top 44 over the iterations of the cut.

In 2020, the new system was introduced, with the top 50 at the end of the second round – 36 holes, a par of 144 strokes – securing passage to Saturday.

For example, if there is a group of six golfers all finishing 50th at -2 under par at the end of the second round, they would all advance to the next round.

The first golfer -1 under par would lead those who pack up and head to Augusta National Car Parks – unless he’s the defending champion, in which case he’ll be needed to hand out the green jacket on Sunday.
