‘Huge possibility’ West Ham sign England international for free

Daily Star journalist Paul Brown reported to Give Me Sport that there is a “strong possibility” of West Ham signing Burnley defender James Tarkowski this summer. The England ace is out of contract in June and looks set to leave.

Tarkowski, 29, has been a regular for Burnley since completing a £3million deal (Times) joined from Brentford in 2016. In his six years under Sean Dyche, the defenseman made 212 appearances for the Clarets.

His form has also seen him win two caps in England – and previously attracted interest from West Ham. The Guardian Report that the Hammers bid £27m for Tarkowski in summer 2020 – which was turned down.

Now Burnley will lose him for free – whether they stay in the Premier League or not. Brown claims there’s a big chance they’ll sign him from Turf Moor for nothing in the coming weeks or months.

“I don’t think interest in Tarkovsky has gone away. Obviously they could be in another division and forced to sell in the summer. I think there is a strong possibility that this deal will still happen.” said Brown.

Brown on Tarkowski: West Ham desperately need the Burnley defender

Moyes currently has four options. Craig Dawson is the first name on the team list at the moment – his performance against Sevilla was great. But he turns 32 next month. Issa Diop’s form was questionable.

Angelo Ogbonna could soon return from injury – but he’ll soon be 34. So West Ham need another defender, but one who meets Moyes’ requirements for a centre-back. Excellent in the air, no frills. Tarkovsky is perfect.

West Ham are clearly an admirer who have tried to sign him for the better part of £30m. Getting him for free, albeit a few years later, will surely interest the Londoners with another Europa League campaign.
