Hungary crash: Footage shows a 42-VEHICLE pile-up leaving one dead and 39 injured after a dust storm

Horrifying footage has captured a 42-vehicle pile-up, killing one person and injuring 39, as a dust storm swept across a motorway in Hungary.

Five trucks and 37 cars were accidentally involved in the horrific collision on the M1 motorway near the village of Herceghalom on March 11.

Local media reports claim a 44-year-old man found dead amid the rubble was not discovered until the following morning.

Among the 39 injured, 10 were children, while 19 vehicles were irreparably damaged. Two injured are said to have suffered life-threatening injuries, twelve others are in serious condition.

The mass collision on the highway happened at around 2:25 p.m. on Saturday, 26 km from the Hungarian capital Budapest.

Horrifying dashcam footage shows a helpless driver, hampered by poor visibility, drifting into the center lane before crashing into a car ahead at some speed, setting off a horrific chain of events.

Shrapnel and other parts of the vehicles can explode while the cars continue to crash into each other.

Additional footage from the scene shows the extent of the pile-up on the freeway, with several vehicles completely charred inside and out.

Smoke billowed from the unidentified vehicles as rescue workers arrived at the scene.

Some cars were visibly rear-ended into others during the shocking collision, with windows smashed and hardware completely shredded.

Four helicopters and 16 ambulances arrived at the scene as they frantically tried to evacuate those involved in the crash.

Firefighters and volunteers from the local town of Bicske also rushed to the scene of the accident as they attempted to extinguish the fire and cool a number of vehicles involved in the accident.

The 39 injured were taken to hospitals in Györ, Tatabanya, Szekesfehervar and Budapest.

Hungary’s Concession Infrastructure Development Plc., which operates and maintains the highways, attributed the mass collision to a localized dust storm.

Meanwhile, traffic on the freeway has resumed in both directions while a criminal investigation has been launched.
