A Chinese man who hid his multimillion-dollar lottery win from his then-wife was sentenced by a court to compensate his ex-partner.
The man, whose last name was Zhou, won a whopping 10 million yuan (1.2 million pounds) in 2021.
But instead of sharing his newfound wealth with his wife, Zhou went on with his life as if nothing had happened, hiding the gains from her.
That meant he didn’t celebrate the lottery win being deposited into his bank account with a dream vacation for the couple, nor with a bottle of wine to toast the win.
Instead, Zhou transferred two million yuan to his sister and another 700,000 yuan to his ex-wife so that she could buy an apartment.

Finally, Zhou’s wife discovered the hidden fortune. It’s unknown how she discovered he had hidden the money, but as soon as she did, she reportedly filed for divorce and sued him for her share of the money.
Zhou’s wife, whose name is unknown, asked the court to grant her two-thirds of the after-tax money.
The woman should have been entitled to half the money because she was married to Zhou, and asked the court for more because he went to great lengths to hide the jackpot from her.
A court in Wenzhou, Zhejiang agreed with her, telling Zhou that he had to reimburse his ex-wife 2.7 million yuan.
The Chinese government holds national lotteries to raise money for welfare and cultural programs across the country. Winners are taxed on their payout.
Rather unusual, this does not seem to be an unusual story in China.
Just last year, another man hid his winnings from his wife and child, even going so far as to collect his winnings in a giant yellow cartoon character costume.
The man, identified only as “Mr. Li,” said he wanted to hide the winnings from his family so the jackpot wouldn’t make them lazy.

“Mr. Li” raked in a whopping 219 million yuan (26 million pounds) in lottery winnings, which he undercover collected from the lottery office in Nanning, in the southern region of Guangxi.
“I didn’t tell my wife and child for fear they might be too complacent and not work or not work hard in the future,” he told the Nanning Evening News in November.
It is not known whether “Mr. Li’s” wife or child has already heard about the prizes.
