Iain Duncan Smith urges ministers to open MI6’s Covid files on Wuhan lab theory

Sir Iain Duncan Smith last night urged ministers to release MI6 briefings on the origins of Covid-19.
The former Tory leader’s intervention came after the US House of Representatives voted unanimously to release information on China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology.
Sir Iain told the Mail that the government “needs to declassify our intelligence services” to justify its initial dismissal of the lab leak theory.
Referring to leaked WhatsApp messages leaked to the press this week, he said: “The UK Government has never told us the truth about their views on this and we only learned them from Matt Hancock.
If they reject the lab leak theory, let’s look at their intelligence as to why they do it.’

A criticized World Health Organization investigation conducted with China in 2021 said the lab leak theory was “extremely unlikely”.
In the US, information about the Wuhan Institute of Virology and information about “potential links” between the research being carried out there and the outbreak of Covid-19 are to be released.
US intelligence agencies are divided over whether a lab leak or an animal spill is the likely source of the virus.
Rep. Michael Turner, chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, said the American public deserves to know “how this virus came about and specifically whether it was a natural occurrence or the result of a laboratory-related event.”
