Ian Wright has praised Everton’s Jordan Pickford for his “amazing” and “amazing” save in England’s 2-1 win over Switzerland on Saturday. as he told ITV Sport (26/03/22 at 23:10).
Gareth Southgate’s side came from a 1-0 deficit to win the friendly at Wembley.
Things could have turned out differently when the Swiss made it 1-0, as a thunderous volley from Fabian Frei from the penalty area was clipped by Pickford on the crossbar.
That moment of the game came from a corner without Frei being marked by anyone in the box as Pickford showed quick reflexes and strong hands to keep it 1-0.
Wright was impressed by this brilliant moment from Pickford as he also shared his thoughts on how the 28-year-old from Everton has never made a mistake that resulted in a goal during his 40 caps.
“That was a great save,” Wright said. “Unbelievable. Brilliant rescue. Fantastic.
On his 40 caps for England without a mistake: “You can’t argue with that, especially when Gareth sees those stats and he stands by them and by him.
“If he makes saves like that, you won’t let him go. But at the same time he has good competition.
“He must continue to produce such performances for England.”
Aaron Ramsdale was originally picked for this squad by Southgate but injury ruled him out.
The Arsenal number one, who joined from Sheffield United last summer, has had a superb season so far for his Champions League rivals.
There have been calls for Ramsdale to replace Pickford as England’s number one.
But given that Pickford becomes a world champion by representing his country’s colours, it will be quite difficult to dethrone him from that spot ahead of Qatar.
In other news, just weeks after Tottenham’s interest, a ‘sensational’ player is available for £20m
