Ian Wright says he has seen a sign that a deal for Newcastle to sign the Briton is ‘imminent’

Ian Wright told the Kelly & Wrighty Show that a deal to bring Todd Cantwell from Norwich to Newcastle is “imminent” – and that is the reason for his absence. Dean Smith blamed his omission on illness.

Cantwell, 23, is yet to repeat the form that has seen him shine during 2019-20 in the Premier League. In his 37 Premier League appearances, he has eight goals in his hand – scoring six and assisting two more. But he is very interesting.

He was linked with many of England’s top clubs including Tottenham and Leeds, after Norwich went down. But a move did not materialize. Cantwell has been in and out of the party for the past 18 months.

Now, Telegraph report Newcastle used to Negotiate to sign Cantwell – with Leeds still linked. The report says a fee could be between £15m and £20m – and Wright thinks it’s almost done.

“They don’t play him, probably because a deal with Newcastle can be done. I don’t know if it will happen or not, I believe it will. I believe if he doesn’t play, a deal is imminent,” Wright talks about Cantwell.

“A player like him, I think he is completely disillusioned. When he first appeared, I had a crush on James Maddison. The way he plays, the creativity, the confidence. You have to feel that he’s not playing because a deal is likely. ”

Wright on Cantwell: Can Norwich star improve Newcastle?

Go straight? Sure is not. Cantwell has magical abilities. But he needs to settle down, at his first club outside of Norwich. Newcastle fans will have to be more patient – compared to Chris Wood and Kieran Trippier.

But what Cantwell has is raw talent, flexibility in the final third, tenacity, aggressiveness, confidence in his own abilities – and flair. That’s what Newcastle lacks, aside from Allan Saint-Maximin, in attack.

Bringing in Cantwell for a fee between £15m and £20m would be a great signing, but the Toon fan base may have to wait for Eddie Howe to reach his full potential.
