Ian Wright slammed Tottenham and Everton duo Matt Doherty and Seamus Coleman for their defense in the Republic of Ireland’s 2-2 draw with Belgium in their international match on Saturday.
Michy Batshuayi opened the scoring by slicing out of the left channel onto his right foot as Wright felt Coleman “didn’t do enough” to prevent the Chelsea man from shooting and Doherty “sauntered back” to his defensive position .
Belgium have already booked their place at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, allowing Roberto Martinez to rest some of his big guns.
These included players like Kevin de Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, while the Republic of Ireland fielded their strongest starting XI.
Still, it was two of their older players that Wright was critical of yesterday as he told ITV Sport (26/03/22 at 23:30).
“When you see that kind of goal,” Wright said. “You think, ‘It feels so easy for a striker to come in like that.’
“Seamus Coleman isn’t doing enough for the challenge. I think Doherty is strolling back. He has to go back and give it a hard time because Seamus is trying to slow him down.
“Then he cuts in and then Doherty has to come in and challenge him. – you can’t take anything away from the finish.”
While Doherty’s form has improved under Antonio Conte of late, the Tottenham man has not had the best season alongside Coleman.
Things tend to go wrong for Coleman at Goodison Park as his Everton side stare relegation in the face.
That was proven when the Toffees were defeated 5-0 at Tottenham a few weeks ago, with Doherty being one of the standouts in that game with two assists.
It wasn’t long since he could have been sold by the north London club but perhaps his end-of-season form will keep him out of the summer transfer list.
