“Idol” finalist says they never “expected” to do finals

American Idol Finalists

American Idol Top 3 Contestants Leah Marlene, Noah Thompson and HunterGirl.

Noah Thompson is one of three finalists on ABC’s “American Idol” season 20, and the singer didn’t even originally enter the competition.

During his audition, Thompson sang for judges Katy Perry, Lionel Richie and Luke Bryan. The 19-year-old construction worker from Kentucky told the judges that his friend Arthur entered him into the competition.

“I didn’t find ‘American Idol,’ my buddy found ‘American Idol’ for me. He signed me up for it,” Thompson shared. “We actually hung sheetrock at work and he said, ‘I’m going to sign you up for that,’ and I said, ‘No, you won’t.'”

He said at the time, “It’s pretty cool to know that someone believes in you more than you believe in yourself.”

Now Thompson has won the hearts of the crowd and made it into the last three with a good chance of winning the competition.

Thompson did not expect to reach the final

In conversation with Hollywood Life and other outletsThompson revealed he didn’t expect to make it to the American Idol finale.

“I feel like there are just no words for it,” he shared. “The way I feel about it, to be honest I’d be completely shocked because I didn’t expect to even get that far – ever – ever in a million years, so I’d be so grateful.”

He added: “But at the same time I would like to see one of them [Leah Marlene] or [HunterGirl], win the show. I would have liked to have seen Nicolina and Fritz [Hager] to win. Honestly, I would have liked to see someone win the show. I’m just happy to be here.”

Thompson will perform with Melissa Etheridge

During the finale, Thompson will team up with country singer Melissa Etheridge for a duet.

Like all three finalists, he performed in his hometown after being greeted with a parade. He recently thanked the fans who came to his concert in his hometown on Instagram.

“What more could a guy ask for?” he wrote on Instagram. “It was the best day of my life and it was all because of you guys!! I can’t believe how many people showed up to show support meant the absolute world to me. A big thank you to these guys for coming out and surprising me in the photos on this stage and everyone else you all gave me a night I will be forever grateful for so thank you.”

Thompson said he came to American Idol with fear.

“I came to this competition terrified like crazy, it’s all so unreal…I have no words man. You mean the absolute world to me, thank you for everything!! Can’t believe this right now #americanidol #top3 #grateful”, he wrote after making the top three in the competition.

“American Idol” airs live coast-to-coast on ABC on Sundays at 8 p.m. Eastern Time.
