Idris Elba transforms into Luther for a new movie… and trades the city for a brand new filming location

Idris Elba transforms into a character in brand new snaps from his upcoming movie Luther, in which he portrays the lead actor of the same name.

The 50-year-old actor was snapped in his character’s signature tweed coat ensemble for the film, which swapped his signature London set for a new location.

After filming earlier this year, the psychological crime film is based on the BBC series of the same name – and will be released on Netflix in early 2023.

The snaps, made available to Empire Magazine, showed Idris looking suave in a long tweed coat worn by his character, DCI John Luther, famously on the BBC series.

One image provided a glimpse of the film’s new, unique setting as the actor made his way through a snowy, mountainous landscape.

Sharing how the franchise transitioned from television to film, the movie star told Empire, “It’s really dangerous when you’re expanding from television to film to throw in a lot of money and change the characteristics of the show for that moment.

“I wanted to make sure that despite a bigger budget, we didn’t distort the parameters of Lutherland too much.”

And while he didn’t reveal where the film will be set, Idris explained that the new release “broke out” of London.

“We’re breaking out of the grim streets of London, we’re taking it a little bit outside of it,” he shared.

The main character is also serving as a producer on the film, which will be directed by Jamie Payne and written by Neil Cross and will also star Andy Serkis and Cynthia Erivo.

The TV series Luther began its first series in 2010 before ending with its fifth season nine years later.

It comes after Idris revealed he wrapped filming on the film earlier this year, telling LADbible: “The Luther movie, guess what, we’ve finished it and we still have some finishing work to do on the film, but he’s almost done.”

“We’re really proud of it.”

He added of the franchise, “We’re opening the doors and expanding it so anything is possible, if you can do that.”
