Dancing With the Stars champion Iman Shumpert almost missed a Mirrorball trophy. In fact, the NBA player almost didn’t do the show at all.
Shumpert was paired with professional dancer Daniella Karagach during his time in competition. The pair won fans’ hearts with their stunning lifts and cheerful personalities that came across on screen.
Ultimately, Shumpert beat runner-up JoJo Siwa to become the first NBA player to ever win the trophy.
Shumpert’s mother convinced him to do DWTS
Shumpert was revealed during a first-person view Interview with Ebony.com that he didn’t originally want to do “Dancing With the Stars”.
Shumpert said he was still training for the NBA when he got the call to do “Dancing With the Stars,” and he thought the show reached out because they thought he was retiring.
“And I didn’t originally intend to do it because I felt like if people were going to see me on the show — that he’s just a retired player,” he said. “Then I found out my mom loved the show and she was super excited when I spoke to her on the phone. After I spoke to my wife, she said the same thing.”
He added: “The encouragement has thrown it over time. But believe me, I had never sat down and watched the show.”
He also said he was nervous after watching a few episodes before going to rehearsals.
“Actually, I was a little nervous, like, ‘I don’t think this is for me,'” he said as he pondered. “‘If I don’t have a big partner, it’s going to be pretty difficult.'”
Shumpert’s wife Teyana Taylor was proud of his victory on Dancing With the Stars.
“He’s an all-rounder. I find it amazing that he can win a basketball championship, win a mirror ball trophy [on DWTS]— and then land roles in movies and TV shows,” she told Ebony. “That’s great, that’s the real goal. It means stepping out of a box, unplugging from an outlet, and being able to plug into multiple outlets. That’s another thing I always tell Iman: “Never get stuck in an outlet.” There are too many of these in the house to be stuck in one near the kitchen.”
The couple have a reality show and are working on a number of different projects.
“I’m so many different people to everyone,” he shared. “But it’s cool.”
Shumpert took part in the “Dancing With the Stars” tour
In addition to winning “Dancing With the Stars,” Shumpert took part in the show’s 2022 tour.
Karagach took to Instagram to share a video of the couple performing their famous “We” themed Halloween dance live.
“DANIMAN ‘IGOT5’ on tour,” she wrote. “Fun fact: @imanshumpert came to rehearse this dance once for exactly 15 minutes before going on tour with us. He’s a pro and there’s no other way for you to tell me.”
Dancing With the Stars returns to a new home in Fall 2022. The show will now air live exclusively on Disney+ instead of ABC.
