Lionel Scaloni urges Paulo Dybala to get regular minutes to secure a place at the World Cup after snubbing the Juventus star and Tottenham transfer target for his latest Argentina squad.

La Albiceleste are playing qualifiers for the Qatar tournament this month, with encounters with Venezuela and Ecuador. But Scaloni opted against including Dybala in his options after removing the 28-year-old from his pre-squad list following direct talks about his fitness.

Scaloni tried to speak to Dybala before finalizing his plans for relations with Venezuela this Friday and with Ecuador next Wednesday. The Bianconeri playmaker has struggled at times with injuries this season, with Dybala missing 13 games in all competitions so far.

A free transfer from Juventus to Tottenham or Barcelona could give back the minutes Scaloni wants to secure for Dybala to earn a spot in his World Cup plans in Argentina.

“I spoke to Dybala when we finalized the preliminary list because he was catching up [in terms of fitness]’ Scaloni said via Gianluca di Marzio. “He’s not up for discussion. But we need him so that when he is called up he shows up at the training camp under optimal conditions.

“We’re doing him a disservice by putting him in the group and he’s not in shape. It’s time for the World Cup and we need him to be okay.”

Dybala has played just three games for 76 minutes with Argentina since November 2019. He did not feature in any of their games in 2020 while staying at home during the 2021 Copa America which La Albiceleste won. Scaloni has since missed short chances between injuries.
