Former Indian smasher Aakash Chopra, while Ajinkya Rahane for his hit against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), thinks Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)’s opener sometimes seems too impressive.
Rahane opened the game in Kolkata against CSK and scored 44 of 34 smooth passes. He was the team’s top scorer as they beat defending champions Chennai by six goals. KKR will next face Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) on Wednesday.
While previewing the game, Chopra revealed about Rahane’s performance against Chennai and emphasized:
“Ajinkya Rahane has a lot to prove. He played well in the first game but I just felt he got a little bit aggressive at times because he seemed to be playing with the format and not the bowler.”
Rahane played only a few games for Delhi Capitals (DC) during the previous IPL season before it was released. The 33-year-old was bought by the Kolkata franchise for ₹1 crore at a major auction last month. Rahane has been going through a rough patch recently as he was also dropped from the India squad for the home game against Sri Lanka.
Chopra also suggested that Kolkata captain Shreyas Iyer should play in 3rd place. He said:
“Kolkata looks really strong, although I want Shreyas Iyer to beat in 3rd place.”
The KKR captain finished in 4th place against CSK and played a smooth, undefeated game with 20 out of 19 passes.
Chopra added on the franchise’s polish:
“Sam Billings is a good player. Andre Russell can handle the order. This KKR batting lineup is in form. Nitish Rana, Shreyas Iyer, Venkatesh Iyer and Ajinkya Rahane are all in form. There’s a lot going on with the Kolkata franchise. ”
While Billings contributed 25 of 22 crucial serves against Chennai, 16-year-old Venkatesh Iyer appeared in the opening 43 game against Rahane.
“They might have a chance with Tim Southee” – Chopra on KKR’s bowling lineup
With Pat Cummins absent for the first few games, Kolkata used Umesh Yadav and Shivam Mavi as two tempo drivers and used Andre Russell as the third speed bowling option in the first game.
Chopra suggested some speed bowling options that could be in the game against RCB, Chopra said:
“Since Pat Cummins is not yet available for KKR, they can go with the XI. If they want to play four foreign players, they can take the opportunity with Tim Southee. There’s also Chamika Karunaratne. Bowling was a bit thin in the last match. Do they want to change it? ”
Yadav was the Player of the Match against CSK thanks to an excellent 2-20.
