Netflix continues to offer a wide range of riveting dramas and one of the latest ones dominating our screens is Anatomy of a Scandal.
Written by David E. Kelley and Melissa James Gibson, it tells the story of Parliamentary Secretary James Whitehouse as he becomes embroiled in a scandal that draws widespread public attention.
As a married man, the stakes are high and things get incredibly tense over the six episodes.
After the audience read it through, thoughts turned to the potential inspiration behind the project. So is Anatomy of a Scandal based on a true story?
Is Anatomy of a Scandal based on a true story?
No, Anatomy of a Scandal is not based on a true story. The people and events depicted are fictitious.
However, the series is based on Sarah Vaughan’s novel of the same name, which is her third book thereafter The art of blind baking and The farm at the edge of the world; it was released in 2018.
While it’s not based on a true story, the stars of the series have addressed that it’s likely to spark conversations about our own society:
Naomi Scott (who plays Olivia Lytton) recently told British Vogue:
“I expect the response to the show will be polarized because these types of issues polarize in real life — and are still incredibly difficult to track, especially in the context of relationships or marriages.”
She continued, “Michelle’s character at the Old Bailey points out that marital rape only became a crime in 1991, which is startling. I hope it will make some men think about certain behaviors or certain scenarios.”
Maybe there are more stories to tell
Although no extension has been confirmed yet, meeting reported when the series was announced that the project could become an anthology series.
This would mean that future seasons would tell their respective stories, appropriate to the theme of scandals. Although the book on the story of Sophie and James is closed at the end of episode 6, we could see the return of Anatomy of a Scandal.
