Is Fentanyl Beneficial? – WSJ

The New York City Department of Health’s “Let’s Talk Fentanyl” campaign made headlines when booking Posters promoted illegal drug use: “Don’t be embarrassed when you’re using, assert that you’re using it safely.” In the midst of an unprecedented overdose crisis, public health officials should acknowledge the possibility of “use it safely.” Treatment with the goal of complete recovery is the way to prevent overdose.

The poster’s message is true in one respect: Users should not be ashamed of having a stimulant use disorder. Negative perception of addiction too often discourages people from seeking help and leads to preventable deaths. But asserting that drugs help users reduce the public’s sensitivity to the real harm of drug use. Lower risk perception will lead to more normal testing. Desensitization and normalization of drug use will inevitably lead to more overdose. Is Fentanyl Beneficial? – WSJ
