What is canon in Three Houses?

Fire Emblem: Three Houses’ canonicity is complicated. The original Three Houses features four different routes, with each storyline diverging when Byleth decides which house to teach for. Although the first half of Three House is more or less the same in all four timelines, once the war begins they differ greatly. Each route has a different ending, each drastically different from the other.

None of the four routes in Three Houses is more canonical than the other, and it’s up to the player to decide what’s canonical or not. It’s also not like the four routes exist in four different timelines, as the player must choose to pair all of the characters. With over thirty playable characters in Three Houses, there are several different pairing options for players to decide at the end of each route. That means there are four main timelines with a plethora of alternative endings depending on who is getting married.

Is Three Hopes canon?

As it is, there is no main canon story in Three Houses, just several different timelines. Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes complicates things further by taking place in a universe where Shez replaces Byleth as the main playable protagonist. Then there are three other routes for Shez to choose, with each route having its own story separate from the others.

However, the three routes in Three Hopes are not connected to the four main routes in Three Houses and should not be taken as canon for the events in Three Houses. However, the backstory and lore established in Three Houses are further fleshed out in Three Hopes. This includes appearances by family members of main characters who never appeared in Three Houses and further expansions of some characters’ personalities. These aspects of the game should be considered canon of the overall larger mythology of the Three House Multiverse.
