What is July 4th?
July 4th has been celebrated every year since 1776, when America passed the Declaration of Independence.
Before that, America was part of Great Britain. However, the people living in America were unhappy with how they were treated by the British government – and demanded their independence.
Independence Day is often accompanied by fireworks, parades, parties – and lots of hot dogs. People across America love to join in the celebration of America’s separation from Britain.
Many Americans want to cancel July 4th, 2022
With everything that’s going on in the US right now, like gun violence and the fall of Roe v. Wade through the Supreme Court, many Americans have taken to social media to “cancel” July 4th.
The 4th of July is meant to be a day when people can be proud of their country and freedom – which many currently believe is impossible.
one Twitter user wrote: “July 4th is canceled this year due to lack of independence”. another said: “We have to cancel July 4th this year. You cannot celebrate a country that has failed by its people.”
