Have you ever wondered if Miyagi-Do is a real thing? The answer may surprise you.

Fans of the hit show”Cobra Kai“Probably familiar with the Miyagi-Do style of karate and it’s actually based on a real martial arts style.

Here’s everything you need to know about the real Miyagi-Do:

Miyagi-Do is based on Kata & Gōjū-Ryū that originated in Japan

Fans familiar with the “Karate Kids” series will remember the teacher Miyagi (Pat Morita) teaching Daniel LaRusso (Ralph Macchio) for “hair removal, hair removal” which Daniel initially felt was useless. What he’s actually teaching Daniel is one of Gōjū-Ryū’s philosophies, according to the book Bubishi, shared on mandarin martial arts Wikipedia page.

“Gō, meaning difficult, refers to closed hand techniques or straight linear attacks; jū, which means soft, refers to open hand techniques and circular movements,” it wrote.

This martial art was founded in 1930 in Okinawa, Japan (Yep, the same place where Mr. Miyagi was born). The name of the founder…wait for it…Chōjun Miyagi.

Miyagi believes that “the ultimate aim of karate-do is to build character, overcome human misery, and find spiritual freedom” according to Miyagi. Ancient Okinawan Martial Arts Volume 2.

Some of the notable MMA fighters who practice this fighting style are from the UFC Giga Chikadze, who many believe will become the first Georgian UFC champion one day, in part due to his unique fighting style. Others include Gunnar Nelson and former UFC champion Robert Whittaker.

Kata is a ‘platform-building exercise based on choreographed, flowing movements’ and Mr. Miyagi taught it to Daniel in ‘Karate Kid’

Another memorable part of the movie “Karate Kid” is when Mr. Miyagi teaches Daniel how to balance. This is the principle of kata, another martial art style that translates to “form”.

According to martial arts Official Wikipedia page, it is described as “a detailed choreographic model of martial arts movements performed alone.”

Based on Rant screen, in the film, Mr. Miyagi tells Daniel “Balance is key. Good balance, good karate. Half-weighed, better packed, home,” this is his way of teaching Daniel his kata. According to the outlet, the fundamentals of kata are “a foundation-building practice based on flexible, choreographed movements.”

We see Daniel pass on his kata knowledge from Mr. Muyagi in season 1 of “Cobra Kai” when he instructs Robby Keen (Tanner Buchanan), “You can have the moves, but that doesn’t matter. important unless you have a balance.”
