Season 4 of New Amsterdam promised to bring “more joy” to its characters after their roughest years, but since Episode 1 aired in September, there has been little joy.

Several high-profile departures have been touted, while the arrival of Veronica Fuentes has been one of the biggest surprises this Applecart has seen as she tries to get the hospital’s budget under control.

Recap of Season 4 of New Amsterdam

Season 4 of New Amsterdam premiered on NBC on September 21, 2021, and after getting off to a nice start, life in New Amsterdam has descended into chaos.

In the early episodes, Dr. Helen Sharpe that she wanted to return to the UK, and Max decided he wanted to go with her when the couple finally got together after years of won’t-they-won’t-her romance.

However, the couple’s plan has been complicated by the arrival of Veronica Fuentes, who has been hired as the new medical director in New Amsterdam, tasked with balancing the books and turning the ailing hospital around by any means necessary.

Veronica’s reckless actions had resulted in Max being cornered over the hospital’s budget, which was not helped by a cyberattack on New Amsterdam in Episode 8 that ended with several supporting cast members losing their jobs.

After the show’s Christmas break, New Amsterdam continued without two of its most popular personalities as Helen and Max completed their move to the UK, but with Max struggling to find his place in an unfamiliar healthcare system, he quickly returned to New Amsterdam to quit Preventing Veronica Fuentes from undoing all his good work.

Is New Amsterdam ending?

Yes, it was announced by meeting that New Amsterdam will come to an end.

The show won’t disappear from our screens immediately, however, as NBC has confirmed that the show will return for a fifth and final season.

In January 2020, in the middle of season 2, NBC boldly renewed New Amsterdam for three more seasons (3, 4 and 5), meaning the show would run for at least five episodes.

But as viewership has steadily declined and the decision was made to end the show rather than offer another renewal.

When New Amsterdam returns for its fifth episode during the 2022/23 TV season, the medical drama will run for 13 more episodes before finally ending.

How many episodes in season 4?

Season 4 of New Amsterdam will have a total of 22 episodes.

The number of episodes was reported by meeting who also confirmed that the fourth season finale is scheduled to air on May 24, 2022.

After New Amsterdam debuted Season 1 with 22 episodes, Seasons 2 and 3 were both impacted by the Covid-19 pandemic and had to be cut to 18 and 14 episodes respectively.

Season 4 of New Amsterdam ended on ABC Tuesday, May 24, 2022.
