Is this a real photo of Abraham Lincoln with a cat on his lap?

Claim:

A photo shows Abraham Lincoln authentically with a cat on his lap.

Evaluation:

INCORRECT

context

This is a composite image that blends prolific Civil War photographer William Brady’s January 1864 portrait of the US President with a stock photo of a cat.

At least as early, a picture of US President Abraham Lincoln with a cat was shared on the Internet like 2018:

blank

However, the photo has been manipulated. The Lincoln part is from a photo-portrait session on January 8, 1864 with a well-known Civil War photographer William Brady:

The cat part, on the other hand, is from an archive photo on the Shutterstock website, contributed by Steve Heap and described as “tan and cream Bengal cat with pleading eyes looking at viewer with room for ad and text.”

blank

Since the photo is a composite image of people or animals that have lived well over a century apart, we classify this claim as False.
