Is Trump the next accused on January 6th?

“Based on the evidence, the court finds it highly probable that President Trump corruptly attempted to obstruct the Jan. 6, 2021 joint session of Congress.” That phrase, taken from a Monday ruling by a federal judge, has echoed in the press, with the Implication that Mr. Trump could soon be indicted.

Better be careful here. Judge David Carter’s sweeping statement is less than meets the eye. The narrow dispute in Judge Carter’s court was whether the House of Representatives could access the emails of John Eastman, a former law professor who gave Mr. Trump terrible legal tips. If the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 riots uses its opinion to call for the prosecution of Mr. Trump or his advisers, it could drag the country into a legal minefield and political vendetta akin to a banana republic would be appropriate.
