On January 21, 2023, the Disney Dining fan blog published an article titled “Walt Disney Replaces Benjamin Franklin on $100 Bill: Report”. Readers emailed us asking if this was really happening, and Google users searched for the phrase “Walt Disney $100 bill.”

However, that story cited reports from Mouse Trap News, a website that publishes Disney-themed satire for fun. In other words, this rumor is not true.

The Disney Dining story began when the change to the $100 bill was said to commemorate the 100th anniversary of The Walt Disney Company, which was founded on October 16, 1923.

the Article began: “To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the founding of The Walt Disney Company, the image of Walter Elias Disney will reportedly be printed on US currency through June 2024.”

As mentioned, the blog linked to a story on the satirical website Mouse Trap News. This original article was published months earlier on October 20, 2022. The caption read, “Walt Disney will take over the $100 bill in 2023.”

The satirical Story started like this:

It has just been announced that Walt Disney will adopt the $100 bill in 2023. The Walt Disney Company celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2023. Disney will be selling special merchandise, decorating their theme parks and apparently adopting US currency as their way of celebrating this platinum milestone.

It’s no surprise that Walt Disney is honored by putting his face on $100 bills. After all, he started one of the most successful companies in America that continues to grow and thrive every year. As mentioned in The Carousel of Progress, Walt was as American as anyone could be. He represented all America and progress and building a better future. The US couldn’t have chosen a better person for the $100 bill.

We have previously published other fact checks on other satirical stories from Mouse Trap News. For example, one of the more popular stories that readers asked us about was that a man lost his hands while riding Space Mountain, and from that point on, the lights for the indoor roller coaster would stay on permanently. The good news for Disney park guests was that this was just another hilarious satire.

As a background here why we sometimes write about satire/humor.
