While the Detroit Lions lost in Week 3, the team put on a show for most of the game and pushing Jamaal Williams back was a big reason for that.
Williams was pushed into a bigger role with a limping D’Andre Swift, and he delivered for 87 yards and two touchdowns that day.
Perhaps the best moment of the day came when Williams scored a touchdown and then spun in the end zone. However, the celebration cost the team a penalty, which Williams was unhappy about.
After the game, Williams spoke to the media about his reaction to the jubilee penalty. As he said, he was surprised to pull the flag as he has gotten away with it in the past.
“I’m like, ‘Did they just tag me for doing the dance that I’ve literally always been doing?’ before key and peele, before all the hip stuff, I’ve been doing this forever, so now my stuff is with (a penalty?) nothing against them, you know, but this is mine. my hips It’s not even a boost, it’s more like a wave. Mine is a wave, so I should get away with it. I’ve gotten away with it all these years, but now they want to arrest me for it,” Williams admitted.
As Williams said, the worst part was the fact that he let the team down with a penalty.
“I was pissed. I was sad and disappointed in myself because I gave the team a penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct and it’s just like ‘damn’. It really affected my mood a little bit but everyone was like, ‘Forget it it, ‘just keep going’, but it still sucks,” he said.
While the penalty was imposed, it didn’t impact the Lions negatively, which was the good news. Williams’ celebration was also fun and one of Week 3’s viral moments. To that end, he should just keep pushing when he feels like it, penalty or not.
Maybe next time he won’t be hit with the late flag.
Williams: Lions need to stop games
Detroit let the game slip away despite Williams’ efforts, but the running back said the goal is the goal and it’s important not to give good teams life on the field.
“We really wanted this, but you know, we have to finish it. We must end it. Minnesota is a good team and really, you just have to finish them,” he said. “You can’t give them time. Can’t give them life. I can’t give them an extra break and we just did that. But we’ll be back. It’s week 3 so we have a while but at the same time we are in a race to improve faster.”
Williams, known as a motivational speaker since his days at Hard Knocks, was asked what his message to the team would be after such a loss. As he said, time is firmly on Detroit’s side.
“It’s only week 3, man. We have so much ball in front of us. We’re playing at the same level as last year, I feel like it’s improved a lot. Therefore, the potential is limitless, just as our potential is limitless. We just have to believe and just keep going and stay hungry and (I) keep saying it, finish our food man,” he said.
Next week, the Lions will try to get back on target against the Seattle Seahawks.
Williams performed for Lions’ offense
While the Lions struggled with an injury to Swift on the run back, Williams stepped up and was a bulldog on offense. He crunched his way to 87 yards, two touchdown days, and tried to maybe wrap things up with this statement result:
If Swift breaks in the short term, which could be the case, Williams will be a crucial player for the Lions for the remainder of the season and into the coming weeks.
The hope is Swift can continue to play a big role, but Williams has proven he can step up and get the job done in a big way. Perhaps there will be even more celebrations in the future.
