James Corden could have been LotR’s Samwise Gamgee, and that’s absolutely terrifying

Sean Astin was the right choice.

Hollywood is full of stories about actors and actresses who had a chance to play a role that turned out to be iconic and they either passed it on or turned it down. One of the most notable of these is Will Smith turning down the role of Neo in the Matrix films. Now a new story has emerged about everyone’s favorite Hobbit sidekick Samwise Gamgee and talk show host James Corden.

During an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, James Corden confirmed that he auditioned for Samwise in Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. However, as Corden recounts, he certainly wasn’t the only one interested in landing a role on the show.

“Every single person in London auditioned for Lord of the Rings,” says Corden.

Corden wasn’t the only one in his circle of friends who received special attention for the role. He says two of his other friends also received callbacks to audition for two more rounds of auditions, but the second round was the last time either of them heard anything. Comments on the Instagram video, posted by Happy Sad Confused host Joshua Horowitz, seem to carry a unanimous feeling that it’s a good thing James Corden lost the role, which eventually went to Sean Astin.

Perhaps not the best display of his talent, but the role James Corden has talked about the most in recent years has been as Bustopher Jones in the infamous film Cats. He has also been the host of The Late Show with James Corden since 2015 but will be leaving sometime in 2023.
