Jamie Carragher claims the £30m Arsenal player is now really surprising him
Pundit Jamie Carragher has named Arsenal star Aaron Ramsdale as his signing in a season that has surprised with his performances.
Arsenal raised eyebrows in August as they aggressively pursued Ramsdale’s signature.
Some people think that Edu, with all due respect, has lost his mind.
Ramsdale has suffered successive relegations with Bournemouth and Sheffield United, not completely covering themselves up in glory.
However, in Edu and Arteta’s mind, Ramsdale was an Arsenal man. They have sanctioned a deal that could go up to £30m – something many people find confusing.
Right now, though, Arsenal got it right. Ramsdale became a focal point in goal, quickly replacing Arsenal’s Bernd Leno.
Ramsdale now has nine clean sheets in 16 games for Arsenal, while he has a great connection to Arsenal fans who are not quite as enthusiastic about Leno.
The money looks well spent, and Carragher has now heaped praise on Ramsdale.
Speaking on Sky Sports on Monday night, Carragher selected Ramsdale as his signing of the season so far.
Carragher noted that Ramsdale was really showing a presence and personality he wasn’t sure he had, praising him for the huge impact at Arsenal that proved him wrong.
“I went to Ramsdale because it was almost the biggest surprise for me,” says Carragher. “When they brought him in, I thought they would put him in as a backup, and almost put him in because he is an English player, by quota. He failed to impress me during his Premier League time at Sheffield United and Bournemouth.
“It’s not just the saves he’s made, he’s a personality, he’s a character. I just think he has a presence about him that I don’t see that he has, and I think he has a big influence on the team,” he added.
