The first pre-season isn’t usually the time for a starting midfielder to make a big impression, but Jared Goff has countered that trend in a big way.
Initially, Goff was not allowed to play for the Detroit Lions in their game against the Atlanta Falcons, but Goff surprised everyone by asking to return. .
Speaking after Detroit’s 27-23 loss to the Falcons on Friday, August 12, Dan Campbell revealed that he was happy with Goff’s night, mainly because he was simply trying on the field when he is supposed to sit.
“I am proud of him. We really have no intention of playing him. He’s the one who came to my office and said ‘I want to play.’ I said ‘I don’t play you.’ He said ‘if they’re playing, I’m playing.’ I said, “OK, you’re playing,” Campbell said. “I appreciate that about him, He went out there and committed that offense. That’s really what you’re looking for in your guys, you want to see them play fast, efficient, move down the pitch and score goals, so I’m very pleased with him. “
As Campbell said, once Goff found out he was going to sit, he simply didn’t let it happen.
“He found out and that’s not what he wanted to do. He has faith in that, and I have complete confidence,” Campbell admitted.
Naturally, there are some risks involved in playing a key starter like Goff, but to see this player want to play and get work done on the pitch was a breath of fresh air for the staff.
However, it wasn’t just Campbell who was happy to see Goff. His teammates are even more motivated to see him perform better.
Taylor Decker: Goff Fired up Lions Line
Detroit’s front line seems to be expecting someone else on the field, but when they see Goff, they’ll be excited.
As Taylor Decker said, Goff’s presence gave the squad some extra juice and ignited the team.
“One thing excites me, Frank, a few others. I don’t think Jared even had to play today, he heard us playing, the starting line, he came up to Dan and said ‘I’m in. I’m playing.’ I like that,” Decker said. “You want your midfielder to play there. “If my boys were out there, we would go out there and play and go down on the pitch and score.” That’s what we did. We’re excited to be out there as a full-blown offense.”
The excitement was clearly visible when the Lions looked like they were on a mission. It’s clear that the Lions are playing around with their back four and are in a good position with Goff as they head into the season.
Goff looks solid in the first game
It’s not just the way Goff plays that gets people excited, it’s the way he plays. The quarterback looked in control and made a lot of big throws down the pitch as part of last night’s 47 yards
As Goff explained after the game, he was very proud of the effort the players put in when they got their kit rehearsed on the pitch.
“Obviously it was great when we scored, but I think we did well,” Goff told the media. “Some mental errors happened before, but mostly worked well, made some plays. Made a pair of playing down the field, running the ball well. Kind of what we intended to do from the jump and we were able to do it. “
Goff being the responsible leader means a lot to his team and is just another way the midfield quartet is putting things together.
