Jenna Ortega met Drew Barrymore once. It was on her talk show The Drew Barrymore Show, in 2021 to promote Ortega’s book It’s All Love. Ortega had just finished filming Scream– the fifth film in the Scream franchise that Barrymore starred in as Ghostface’s opening kill Casey Becker more than 25 years ago.
Ortega knew at the time that she had filmed the opening scene scream 5, which Barrymore honored in various, subtle ways. “We paid such an intense tribute to Drew, whether it was the pink sweater or playing with the knife in the knife block,” Ortega tells StyleCaster while promoting her brand ambassador at Neutrogena.
The only problem is that she couldn’t tell Barrymore about it. “She asked me about it Scream. I couldn’t say anything. I couldn’t do anything, but I guess people took what I said from that interview and assumed I was going to kill, and I got so nervous,” says Ortega. “Talk about Scream it’s so nerve wracking because everything feels like a spoiler and people will twist it no matter if you reveal something.” However, after the interview, Ortega received an email from Barrymore congratulating her on being a part of Scream Family. “I didn’t speak to her at the time, but she emailed me a message that was really sweet and lovely,” says Ortega. “She’s part of Scream. She is the headmistress. It’s part of the core. I have yet to speak to her personally, but I adore her.”
Of course, fans know that scream 5 is not Ortega’s first horror film. She has also starred in the black comedy The Babysitter: Killer Queen; the scary movie Studio 666; and the slasher movie X. As the current Generation Z scream queen, Ortega is used to washing stage blood, dirt, and heavy makeup off her face at the end of the day. Her secret to clean skin is Neutrogena’s Stubborn Texture Cleanser. “I’ve been doing a lot of jobs lately that require heavy makeup or a lot of stage blood and grime. The Stubborn Texture Cleanser is a good exfoliant,” she says. “It gives me a clean palette and I can go to work the next day, whether it’s back on set or a photoshoot. I feel refreshed and rejuvenated leaving these old things behind.”
For Ortega, beauty is more internal than external, a lesson she learned from Neutrogena. “It’s less about the outer beauty and more about the inner beauty because the skin reflects how you take care of yourself,” she says. “[Neutrogena] focuses on highlighting what is already there. That’s a really positive message, especially for young girls at a time when they go online and only see Photoshopped images or highlights of people’s lives.”
Ahead, Ortega spoke to StyleCaster about her “nerve-wracking” audition for scream 5what she hopes for her character Tara Carpenter scream 6and how she takes Wednesday Addams on the upcoming Netflix show, Wednesdayis a twist fans have never seen from the character.
At her audition for scream 5
“I had a casting scene with Melissa [Barrera who plays Sam], and it was our scene in the hospital where I tell her she has to get the fuck out. I did this one and they asked me at the last minute if I would come down to read this other scene. I read it and realized it was an opening kill. I got really nervous. I had to read cold for them, so the first time I read the script aloud with them watching me, and I had to try to act without really knowing what was coming next. But to actually shoot that day, I was incredibly nervous. It was scary, but it was probably one of the funniest I’ve ever had on a set. I love to scream and cry. I love being in pain. It was my thing. I would do it again.”
How she correctly guessed the killers scream 5
“I didn’t know who the killers were. The originals may have known, and the killers themselves. We haven’t heard anything. We shot in almost chronological order so we could save the big reveal for the end. The last two weeks was the killer reveal and we shot the scene. It wasn’t even on the call log. It was something you just showed up for and it happened. It’s funny because even the dynamic between casts always got awkward whenever someone made a joke like, “Oh, you’re the killer.” Or: ‘But you kill people, don’t you?’ And just waiting for an actual answer.
I kind of predicted it. I was pretty proud of myself. [I predicted] richie David Arquette even says so. “Never trust the love interest.” It’s always the love interest. I sort of predicted Amber because Tara and Amber were friends in a previous script, so I was like, ‘Oh, would they have a dual romantic interest?’ She was also kind of mysterious and defensive towards me. I don’t know – maybe it’s just my personal trust issues that are going into the script.”
On her hopes for Tara scream 6
“We haven’t found out who Tara is. She just screamed and cried the whole time. Establishing a personality or seeing them as badass would be a cool gamble for them. I also love the relationship between her and Melissa Barrera’s character Sam. They’re off to a rocky start and it’s nice to see if there could be two sisters at the end.”
About reprising her role as Ellie in You
“I would be down. The writers are brilliant. Penn [Badgley, who plays Joe] is so talented and does such a good job. I know he doesn’t quite like his character, but he really does it that well. i love ellie This was my first adventure out of the Disney realm and into the thriller and horror genre. I would like to return to this show. i miss ellie I’m curious to see where Joe goes in general, but if Ellie could be with me I’d love that.”
At her audition for Wednesday
“I was filming X in New Zealand and we were shooting at night. I was up almost 24 hours. I was told I had to call Tim Burton at the end of my day. I wore prosthetics and had a long cut above my lip and I had glycerin in my hair so my hair was all oily and peeling. I was tired, delirious and got this call. I did two scenes. I didn’t intend to do another TV series because I’ve done it so many times and I’ve done more films. But Tim – even the chance to meet him would have been an honor. Also, Wednesday has never really been in the Latina light, even though she’s Latina, and I think that’s really important. It would be cool to give that level and level of representation to girls who look like me or are part of my community. I read with them. I didn’t feel too confident in my reading. I remember sending my mom tapes of me doing the scenes after which I was like, ‘Do you think that would have been better? Maybe I should have gone that route.” The actual filming of the show was really interesting. There were so many different paths we could have taken for this character. I know that’s weird to say because she’s expressionless. But even during filming we tried so many different readings and so many different options. I hope it’s something people will agree with and like. We tried to do something a little bit different. I just hope it resonates and I live up to her.”
scream 5 can be streamed on Paramount Plus. Here’s how to watch it for free.
