Jenni Hermoso files sexual assault charges against Luis Rubiales

Spanish football star Jenni Hermoso has filed a formal complaint with the Attorney General’s Office accusing Spanish Football Federation President Luis Rubiales of sexual assault. Rubiales grabbed and kissed her during the World Cup trophy ceremony, a kiss she later said was not consensual.

Prosecutors at Spain’s Supreme Court on August 28 opened a preliminary investigation into whether Rubiales may have committed sexual aggression. The decision followed a series of complaints from third parties and was based on a statement from the midfielder, who said she felt she had been the victim of a “sexist act”.

However, in order for the authorities to investigate the case, it was necessary for the victim to report the case himself. Hermoso finally declared Tuesday at the Attorney General’s office.

Most likely, the Spanish Supreme Court will consider the case, as the alleged crime was committed abroad by a Spanish citizen.

The incident sparked a wave of criticism in Spain, with many, including members of the government, calling for Rubiales to resign. Instead, in a defiant speech, the football official blamed “fake feminism” and the press for the riots, said the kiss was consensual and accused Hermoso of lying.

The Spanish women’s soccer team responded, announcing that they would not play with the national team again until there was a change in the federation’s leadership.

National coach Jorge Vilda has been fired and Rubiales has been provisionally suspended by FIFA while criminal investigations continue.

However, Spain’s Sports Administrative Court found that his behavior was merely a potentially serious breach of Spain’s sporting code and not a ‘very serious’ error, making it impossible for the government to seek his indefinite suspension as President of the Football Federation.
